Driving Licence Requirements

The lessee and the driver must be in possession of a full, valid driver's license for at least one year and present it together with an identity card or passport while receiving delivery of the vehicle. Furthermore, the following conditions apply depending on the issuing country of the driving licence.

EU Driving Licences
Valid driving licences of all EU countries are accepted

All Other Licences
Driving license printed with non Roman Alphabet (Arabic, Japanese, Cyrillic, etc.) must be complemented by an International driving license.

For driving licenses from countries that are not part of the Geneva/Vienna Convention on RoadTraffic (e.g. China) an International Driving Permit (IDP) in addition to the valid original license must be presented at the time of pick up. In order to drive a motor vehicle on the territory of Romania, persons who are holders of a national driving license issued by the authorities of a state that is not a member of the Geneva/Vienna Convention on Road Traffic, nor a member of the European Union, or with which Romania has not concluded a treaty on the mutual recognition of driving licenses must also possess an Internation Driving License

U.S. and Canada citizens who wish to drive in Romania must have an International Driving Permit (IDP) in addition to the valid U.S./ Canada state drivers' license (DL).

Photocopies, digital licenses, Learner's Permits, and driver's licenses with driving restrictions will not be accepted.

Certain regulations apply related to minimum age and possession of driver's license which can be found during the booking process depending on the booked vehicle. Basically, the minimum age for every driver is 18 years (having held the driving license for at least 1 year). A deviation from the minimum age is possible depending on the vehicle.

In Romania, the following rules apply for the minimum age and possession of a driver's license:

Tariff information

General

All credit cards and debit cards from internationally recognized credit card companies - such as American Express, Eurocard/Mastercard, Visa are acceptable as payment methods, whereas all prepaid, recharge or virtual (phone) cards are not accepted. The payment method must have been issued in the name of the driver and presented physically at the time of vehicle pick-up and be valid at this time and for the rental duration. Cards distributed by neobanks (online-only banks), Revolut or Apple pay are not accepted.

The payment method must be issued in the name of the driver. This must be presented at the time of vehicle pick-up and be valid for the entire duration of the rental.

Payments with credit and debit card may require the PIN of the card.

The full rental amount will be due upon transfer of the vehicle.

Cash deposits and payments are not accepted.

An advance charge approval is obtained for the chosen means of payment as a security.

The security deposit is half of the rental plus the excess. The exact amount of the deposit will be determined upon pickup as the amount depends on the vehicle. It varies between 100 and 6,000 euros.

To hire one of the following vehicles, customers must present two credit cards: FDMR, FDAR, XFAR.

The security deposit for bookings with no protection included ranges between EUR 3,000 until EUR 6,000.

Special rental information when booking Prepaid rates

Prepaid tariff - Pay now

When booking at a prepaid rate, the payment will be charged along with the total rental price (incl. booked extras and charges) prior to the rental. The driver and mode of payment shall be finalised at the time of reservation and cannot be changed. The confirmed credit card should be valid and available for presentation on collection of the vehicle. All extra costs that occur during the car rental will be charged to this credit card.
A refund shall not be issued for non-collection, vehicle being collected late or returned early.

Changing Booking
A prepaid booking can be changed up to 48 hours before the start of the rental (depending on availability) in return for a booking modification fee of 20,00 EUR. Any payment already made towards the rental will not be refunded; nor shall any differential amount be refunded if this modification leads to a lesser rental cost. Any changes made to a prepaid reservation may impact the rental rate. A change from a prepaid rate to a non-prepaid rate is not possible.

Cancellation

A booking can be cancelled before the rental begins. In the event of cancellation, the payment in advance already made towards the rental shall be paid back subject to a cancellation charge, which will be withheld and shall be in the amount of the rental charge (including any extras and charges) for a maximum of 3 rental days. In case the rental cannot be concluded due to unavailability of the accepted identification documents, respectively identity card or passport and valid driving license and International Driving permit for countries that are not part of the Geneva/Vienna Convention on Road Traffic (e.g. China) or US/Canada driving permits, or due to unavailability of the accepted payment method and credit or debit cards VISA , MasterCard or American Express are not available at the time of pick up or Cards distributed by neobanks (online-only banks), Revolut or Apple pay as described in General Information are presented for payment and deposit, then the cancellation fee will be withheld and shall be in the amount of the rental charge (including any extras and charges) for the value of the rental charge (including any extras and charges) or up to maximum of 3 rental days, whichever value is smaller.

No-show
In the event that the booked vehicle is not collected or not collected at the agreed time the rental charge already paid shall be withheld in full.

Protection conditions

Third Party Insurance

Protection coverage for the vehicle rented includes Third Party Liability with a maximum cover of EUR 1,000,000.00 EUR for material damages. Maximum cover for personal injuries is EUR 5,000,000.00 EUR

Excluded from the protection is the use of the vehicle for the transport of dangerous goods. All protection as part of the rental contract will become void, in particular, if an unauthorized driver has used the vehicle or if the driver of the vehicle does not possess the required driver's license at the time of the event giving rise to claim.

Collision Damage Waiver (CDW)

Collision Damage Waiver removes the drivers responsibility to a part of the vehicle in case of damage.

Excluded from the coverage are damages on windshield, tyres, rims and interior.

If CDW is accepted, customer is only responsible for the following amounts:

If loss damage waiver is not accepted the customer will be held liable for the full value of the car.

If the documents required for the insurance file (Police report, Insurance declaration, Accident Report, copies of documents of the third party) are not provided at the time of return, the customer will be held liable for the entire value of the repairs or the full value of the car.

Collision Damage Waiver with reduced excess (G)

If CDW is already included in the rates, the renter can choose Collision damage waiver with reduced excess to reduce the Non-Waiverable Responsibility.

Excluded from the coverage are damages on windshield, tyres, rims and interior.

If Collision Damage Waiver with reduced excess is accepted, customer is only responsible for the following amounts:

Theft Protection (TP)

Theft Protection removes the drivers responsibility to a part of the vehicle in case of theft.

If Theft protection is accepted, customer is only responsible for the following amounts:

Tire and Windscreen Coverage (GT)

The tire and glass coverage provides protection for damages on tires, windscreen, side windows and the rear window with a deductible of EUR 0.00.

If the protection is not accepted, the customer will be held liable for the full extent of the damage.

Personal Accident Protection (PAP)

By taking out personal accident protection can also be extended to cover the consequences of an accident.

By taking out PAP the limit of liability is:
50,000.00 EUR (per car) for invalidity,

For car groups MCMR - FDAR:
5,000.00 EUR (per car) chirurgical intervention;
2,500.00 EUR (per car) medical expenses (diagnose, urgent transportation to the closes hospital, medical treatment ambulatory prescribed by the doctor)

For car groups SVMR:
6,000.00 EUR (per car) chirurgical intervention;
3,000.00 EUR (per car) medical expenses (diagnose, urgent transportation to the closes hospital, medical treatment ambulatory prescribed by the doctor)

Cross Border Rentals & Territorial Restrictions

Cross Border Rentals are allowed to the following countries:
Bulgaria, Hungary, Greece, Austria, Germany, Switzerland, Czech Republic, Montenegro, Croatia, Poland, Slovenia, Slovakia.

In case of offence against Cross Border & Territorial Restrictions all protections lose their validity.

Cross Border Rentals are not allowed for car groups FDMR, FDAR and XFAR.

Foreign Use Charge

For travels abroad, additional charges may apply and are governed by the respective country of entry and must be requested at the local rental station.

One-Way Rentals

One-way rentals within Sixt locations in Romania are allowed under conditions depending on tarif.

For One-Way-Rentals within Sixt locations in Romania a charge of EUR 0.00 up to 201.11 EUR applies.

International one-way-rentals are only allowed to Bulgaria.

For One-Way-Rentals to Bulgaria a charge of 476.00 EUR applies.

All international One-Way Rentals are on request. Please contact the local rental station or [email protected].

One-Way Rentals are not allowed for car groups FDMR, FDAR and XFAR.

In the case of unannounced and unauthorised one-way rentals, we reserve the right to charge an additional fee.

Navigation system

Navigation systems are available subject to a fee.

Wi-Fi

Wi-Fi is available subject to a fee.

WiFi Hotspot has service coverage only in Romania.

In the event of theft or loss of the Wi-Fi device, a payment of 100 EUR (excluding VAT) will be forfeited.

Vehicle refueling

All vehicles are supplied with a full tank of fuel and should be refilled prior to return to Sixt, otherwise the current prices per litre of petrol or diesel will be charged in addition to a refuelling fee.

If desired, the vehicle will be refuled according to currently available conditions after returning it to the station.

The current cost of refueling is 3.59 EUR per liter which is the result of the current local prices per liter of petrol or diesel with addition of the refueling service fee.

Alternatively, you may purchase a tankful of fuel at the time of rental at a price that is competitive with local fuel stations and return the tank empty. No refunds will be given for unused fuel.

Delivery & Collection

Deliveries and collections are available at the local rental station subject to a fee.

Within city limits a Delivery/Collection Service charge of 47.60 EUR applies.

The renter is obliged to report the vehicle back to SIXT at the end of the rental period.

Diesel guaranteed

Upon request, we will guarantee a vehicle with a diesel engine for a fee.

Winter equipment

A fee will be charged for winter tyres, unless already included in the base rental price. Snow chains and ski racks are also optionally bookable.

During the period of November 1st until March 31st snow tires are mandatory in Romania and will be charged.

Roadside Protection

The mobility service is an extended breakdown cover during the rental and protects against high service fees and repair costs in the following self-caused events, within national territory and on authorised travel abroad: key locked inside the vehicle, loss of keys, getting stuck, jump start in the event of an empty battery and breakdown due to lack of fuel or electricity.

All services must only be requested by using the Sixt 24-hour roadside assistance. This assistance also determines the type and extent of the cover, with the objective of keeping the renter mobile. Unless caused by Sixt itself within the framework of the mobility service, the renter is liable for damage to the rental vehicle.

Spare parts, as well as the cost of fuel and tires are not included.

A premium location fee occurs for rentals at airport and train stations.

A Lost Of Key Fee of 238.00 EUR as well as the costs for the new keys applies.

Vehicle Cleaning

In case the car requires a special cleaning procedure (i.e. smell removal, animal pollution, spill of liquids etc.) after returning, a cleaning charge will apply.

Flexi Return Guarantee

Plans can change. As a flexible mobility partner, we are happy to adapt to your plans. Thanks to our Flexi Return guarantee, you have the freedom to return the vehicle at any time to an authorised Sixt station, regardless of the rental agreement.

If your plans change during your hire period, let us know by telephone on +4021 9400 or in person at any of our stations, and our employees will amend your rental contract. By doing this, we can adapt to your changed plans. This service is, of course, free of charge for you.

Flexi Return Guarantee in the tariff Pay later

If you return your vehicle earlier than agreed in the rental contract, we will charge the rental price according to the rental contract. You will receive a partial discount for the unused rental days.

Flexi Return Guarantee in the tariff Pay now

When booking at a prepaid rate, a refund shall not be issued for returned early. For further information please refer to the section Prepaid Tariff - Pay now.

Flexi Late Return in both tariffs (Pay later & Pay now)

If you return the vehicle later, without notifying us, we will bill you EUR 11.90 service fee for the Flexi Return Service. This fee applies in addition to any extra days which might incur due to the rental extension.

Flexi Return Location in both tariffs (Pay later & Pay now)

If you return the vehicle to a station other than that agreed in the rental contract, the Flexi Return location will incur a service fee of EUR19.99 if we have not been informed of the changes to the rental contract in advance.

With our Flexi Return guarantee, you will always have maximum flexibility and cost-efficiency when driving.
