Lancashire has diverse landscapes with rolling hills and windswept moors. Visitors to the county have a wealth of attractions to explore and there's plenty of history to uncover and tasty cuisine to sample. The county covers 1,189 square miles, with world-famous seaside towns like Blackpool to the west and the open landscape of the Pennines in the east.
Parts of the Pennines are designated areas of outstanding natural beauty and stretch around historic Lancashire towns like Bolton, Chorley, and Ramsbottom. The West Pennine Moors cover 90 square miles of natural, unspoiled countryside. Drive to the Pennines as part of your road trip and discover the diverse patchwork of moorland with abounding nature, many reservoirs, old villages, and dense woodland. The area is excellent for walking and includes routes like The Darwen Tower Walking Route, which opens up to incredible views from the 19th-century Jubilee Tower. Some of the reservoirs are excellent for cycling, such as Rivington Reservoir, taking in Liverpool Castle and Rivington Pike.
The Lancashire coastline features different landscapes, including the distinctive limestone scenery around Arnside and Silverdale's Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, with salt marshes and farming land. The coastal resorts of Blackpool and Morecambe and the Fylde coast are also lovely and you can walk parts of the Lancashire Coastal Way, a 137-mile path from Merseyside to Cumbria. Here, you'll enjoy wonderful views over Morecambe Bay, the Lake District, and the Bowland Fells. It's also likely you'll see seabirds, as this coastal area and is internationally renowned for many kinds.
While in the area in your hire car, visit Lancaster, the county town, as well as Blackpool on the coast and the pretty market town of Ormskirk.
The city of Lancaster boasts the Queens only castle in northern England and has a fascinating history to discover. Strolling along the canal or cruising along its waters are pleasant pass-times and, if you spot the Lune Aqueduct, you'll be impressed by this architectural gem. Then, amble up the wooded pathways around Williamson Park to see the 1909 Ashton Memorial, with panoramic views.
Blackpool has always been a famous holiday destination and now has a new mission to become a 21st-century upmarket resort. Dominated by the Golden Mile, there are many attractions, including the Blackpool Tower, the pier, the theme park, the Winter Gardens, and the pretty nighttime Blackpool illuminations.
As a historic market town, Ormskirk lies in the heart of West Lancashire and has lots of character and history. The town centre offers great shopping, many restaurants, cafes, and pubs all within walking distance. Don't miss the market that runs every Thursday and Saturday. Visit Ormskirk Parish Church, dating back to the 12th century and the grade-II listed gothic-style clock tower.
Lancashire has a temperate climate. Summers are usually warm but not hot and winters are cool or even cold with snowfall. It's rare to experience extreme weather in Lancashire, which makes it a good place to visit all year round. Temperature peak in July and drop to lows in January. It can rain at any point in the year and it's always advisable to have a jacket with you, even in the summer.
Discover Lancashire's wonderful food and award-winning ales! Some of the seaside towns have marvelous seafood, while other local specialties include butter pie, a vegetarian shortcrust pie with onions and potatoes, delicious black pudding, which is famous in Haslingden and Bury, and Lancashire hotpot, with lamb neck and sliced potatoes on top.
Blackpool pleasure beach is a great place for children with rides and entertainment for all ages. There's also Blackpool zoo with its fascinating array of animals. Farmer Ted's Farm Park in Ormskirk has guinea pigs, Shetland ponies, and more exotic animals like llama for children to interact with. WWT Martin Mere Wetland Centre in Burscough is also a super place to experience nature, with walks, boat trips, and an adventure playground for children.
