Didcot's Incredible Railway History

Didcot's main claim to tourism fame, though, is the Didcot Railway Centre. The modern town grew up in the mid-19th century when the Great Western Railway opened Didcot Station designed by Isambard Kingdom Brunel. The Railway Centre is housed in one of the old rail depots close to the present day station. The collection includes a large number of Great Western Railway steam locomotives as well as other rolling stock and historic railway equipment, including a turntable and pit originally located at Southampton Docks. The centre also hosts regular steam days when you can enjoy a short but nostalgic journey on one of these classic trains.

Sight Seeing Information

Didcot makes a great base for visiting the nearby university town of Oxford. Take a stroll through the grounds of university colleges such as Exeter College or Worcester College with its beautiful gardens. Tours can also be taken inside Christ Church and Magdalen Colleges. Oxford is home to many famous museums. The Ashmolean and the Pitt Rivers are very different in character but both worth a visit.
